Insurance & Damage Liability

Insurance & Damage Liability

Guests may use a personal auto insurance policy for coverage only if they provide documented proof from their insurer stating that:

  1. The policy covers comprehensive and collision damage to a rented vehicle up to its full replacement value, and
  2. The coverage remains in effect even if the damage occurs during off-road use.

If such documentation is not provided prior to departure, the renter is required to purchase, at minimum, liability insurance through Outdoorsy as part of the booking process.

Outdoorsy offers several insurance packages with varying levels of liability, damage coverage, and deductibles. These plans are subject to change, and we strongly recommend that guests review the most current policy information directly on Outdoorsy’s website or by searching for “Outdoorsy renter insurance plans.”

Please note: Standard Outdoorsy insurance policies typically do not cover damage caused by off-road use, including, but not limited to, impacts with rocks, trees, terrain features, or collisions with unlicensed off-highway vehicles such as ATVs or side-by-sides.

Regardless of the insurance selected, the renter is fully responsible for all damage to the vehicle and any included accessories. This includes, but is not limited to, damage to rooftop tents, awnings, recovery gear, kitchen kits, or structural vehicle components. Outdoorsy may offer optional damage protection coverage that insures some of these items; however, it remains the renter’s responsibility to understand the extent of coverage and assess any gaps.

Renters are liable for the entire cost of repairs or replacements, up to and including the total value of the vehicle and accessories, whether the incident was their fault or not. We urge all guests to confirm that their insurance—whether personal or through Outdoorsy—adequately protects them for their intended use of the vehicle.

Off-road travel carries inherent risk, and we’re happy to answer any questions you may have in advance of your trip.

If the vehicle is returned with damage, we will withhold your security deposit while damage is assessed.

  • If the total cost is less than the deposit, the balance will be refunded within 72 hours.
  • If the total cost exceeds the deposit, the credit card on file will be charged for the difference.
  • Once repairs are complete, any excess funds will be refunded, and a final statement will be issued to release you from further financial liability.
Emergency Roadside Assistance

Roadside assistance is available with certain Outdoorsy insurance packages, or as an add-on.

Rental Rules

Smoking & Pets

Smoking and vaping is strictly prohibited in all of our vehicles, tents, and trailers. We have a zero tolerance policy. You will be charged cleaning and ozone fees of $250+ if any indication of smoking or vaping is found.

Pets are also NOT allowed in any of our vehicles, tents, and trailers. Cleaning fees of $250+ will be assessed if evidence of pets is found.

Return

Vehicle Return Process

Return arrangements must be scheduled at least one day prior to your planned drop-off. If you’re running late for any reason, please contact us as soon as possible to coordinate. Vehicles returned after 7:00 PM may incur a late return fee equal to half a day’s rental rate.

To ensure a smooth return experience, we kindly ask that you complete the following before drop-off:

  • Refill the fuel tank to full
  • Remove all trash and personal belongings
  • Notify us of any damage, mechanical issues, or unusual wear

Cleaning: We don’t expect a perfectly detailed vehicle — just a reasonable level of cleanliness. Please remove obvious trash or debris and avoid returning the vehicle in extreme condition (e.g., fully coated in mud or dust inside and out).

There’s no need to wash the vehicle unless it’s heavily soiled. If a rinse is necessary, do not use automated car wash tunnels; a manual spray wash is safest. In cases where the vehicle requires extensive cleaning beyond normal use, a cleaning fee may be assessed to cover the cost of restoring it to rentable condition.

Driving Limitations & Safety Guidelines

Driving Limitations & Safety Guidelines

Peak Overland vehicles are carefully outfitted to handle rugged terrain, with heavy-duty components, off-road tires, and elevated suspension systems. While our fleet is built for adventure, it’s important to remember that no vehicle is indestructible — and proper care and judgment are essential to your safety and the safety of our equipment.

Off-road travel involves inherent risks, including uneven terrain, steep inclines, and unexpected obstacles. Drivers should know their own skill level and never attempt terrain beyond their ability to safely navigate. You are fully responsible for any damage to the vehicle, its accessories, or injury resulting from unsafe driving or misuse.

Due to the added height and weight of rooftop tents and camping gear, our vehicles have a higher center of gravity than stock SUVs. This makes them more susceptible to rollover, particularly on uneven surfaces or during sudden changes in direction. Please drive cautiously, avoid sharp turns at speed, and maintain awareness of trail conditions at all times.

Additionally, be aware that roof-mounted tents add significant height to the vehicle. Most rigs stand well over 7 feet tall, and may not clear standard parking garages or drive-through overhangs. Always check height clearance signs before entering any structure.

We encourage all guests to discuss their planned routes with us in advance. Some roads and trails may be closed seasonally, poorly maintained, or unsuitable for our vehicles due to safety concerns or insurance restrictions. We’ll gladly provide guidance to help you choose an appropriate and memorable route.

Peak Overland supports and promotes the responsible use of public lands. Please stay on designated trails, do not enter closed areas or private property, obey all posted fire restrictions, and always leave campsites cleaner than you found them. Responsible use of our public lands ensures they remain enjoyable and available to everyone.

Vehicle & Equipment Operation

Modifications & Equipment Restrictions

Guests agree to operate the vehicle as provided, without removing, altering, or modifying any components or accessories. This includes, but is not limited to: rooftop tents, roof racks, ski racks, bike racks, roof panels or hardtops, wind fairings, spare tires, seats, lighting systems, recovery gear, or kitchen equipment.

Guests may not install or attach personal equipment to the vehicle or its accessories without prior written approval from Peak Overland.

Any damage caused by improper use, tampering, unauthorized removal, or attempted modification of vehicle components will result in a claim against your security deposit for the full cost of parts, labor, and any associated repairs. If repair costs exceed the security deposit, the remaining balance will be billed to the renter through Outdoorsy or via the payment method on file.
